Hi, my name is Sandie! My husband John and I opened our Gift Shoppe in 1996. I had always done a little crocheting for friends and family and John liked making things out of rough lumber. When our girls left home to peruse their dreams, we both started looking for things to do to fill the void. I crocheted like mad and my house started filling up with John's handiwork. Soon we had a basement full and wondered what to do with it all.
Since we had an empty building on the property, we decided to make that into a Craft Shoppe. We first started working on our dream in the summer of 1995, converting an existing horse barn into what is now our Shoppe. We spent that summer planning, and by Fall we started remodeling. By next June we were ready to open.
We decided on the name of "Blue Eye Crafts 'N Gift Shoppe". Why the name Blue Eye? When John was a young boy, he remembers an old Indian who lived and hunted in this area and the locals called him "Ole Blue Eye" because he had one blue eye. The whole area soon became known as "Blue Eye". Around the vicinity several artifacts have been found through the years. Legend has it that "Ole Blue Eye's" tribe lived here for a while and when they moved on, "Ole Blue Eye" for some reason stayed behind. Some say there is an Indian burial ground near here and that the council meetings of all the tribes were held down by the creek. Others say that just across the road on the knoll is where they made their arrowheads; many were found as the ground was tilled. We thought it fitting to name the Shoppe after him, being this was originally his home.
The first year we had only one 24X24 floor space. Next year we remodeled the hay loft and added the second floor to the Shoppe. In 2001 we added a small tea room and now offer complementary coffee and tea. Since then, with God's love and blessing, together with wonderful and faithful consignors and customers, our business has steadily grown, so much so, that in 2005 we had to add on again. Come sit a spell on our front porch, visit old friends and meet new ones. You never know, you may see an occasional bear, deer, or turkey stroll by, or you might even get a glimpse of "Ole Blue Eye" himself wandering through on his way to the trading post.
